Collabaret is an open mic event for cabaret, comedy, burlesque performers and musicians to try out new and untested stuff in front of a friendly audience of artists and cabaret enthusiasts.
It is headlined by a paid feature artist and there is a tipping system in place for the audience to celebrate open mic artists. If we sell enough tickets, it is also split with performers. Everyone gets paid something (except the host and producer Libby Trainor Parker).
I want to be part of the cast for some Collabaret fun. What do I need to know about it?
Each event includes a varied and diverse line up, featuring a range of arts disciplines (cabaret, musical comedy, comedy, burlesque, storytelling). Therefore, if you don't get on for this show, we will do our best to get you on for the next. If you have been on our lineup before, we can have you back, but we won't have repeat/back to back, consecutive performers in shows. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
How do I express my interest?
Fill out the EOI form. It’s not an application, it an expression of interest showing us what you want to do so we can put you into a show that will suit your vibe. We program shows based on the EOI form so if you haven’t filled out the form, you won’t be on our radar.
Please understand there is a long wait list, but we will get you on as soon as we can.
We have a warm, friendly, supportive, diverse audience. Our job is to give them an excellent experience so they keep coming back. That means some acts or material won’t work in this room. We ask you to save that stuff for a different audience where it will land better, and you and your audience will have an awesome time. Also, if your act or your material is discriminatory, defamatory or punches down, we would love it if you could find another place to perform your work. That stuff will not suit a Prompt or Collabaret audience and this is not negotiable.
But how do I find the form?
It's also in the Linktree in our Instagram bio @promptcreativecentre
It's in the Facebook event
It's on the Collabaret ticket link
And it's in the info at the bottom of each post about the show.
Who gets paid and why isn't everyone paid the same amount?
Collabaret started because Prompt Creative owner and operator Libby Trainor Parker wanted to try out some new comedy cabaret material but there weren't many open mic rooms that would suit her style of silly. She figured other people probably needed the same opportunity to try out new things, so she created Collabaret as a dress rehearsal-style show where anything could happen and audiences know to be supportive and kind because artists are being vulnerable and experimental.
Ticket prices are low ($10 - $20) because this show is a rough and ready, loose format like a dress rehearsal or a work in progress performance. Ticket sales cover fees for lighting/sound technicians, accompanists and staffing. There is a tipping system in place where audience can tip performers, the proceeds of which are divided up after the show.
